Abbotsford School District's Summer School Programs Inspire Students and Staff
This summer, the Abbotsford School District's Summer School Programs provided a dynamic and enriching experience for students, staff, and families alike. From July 2nd to July 26th, our secondary and elementary programs were alive with the energy of hands-on learning, creativity, and community building.
At the secondary level, students participated in a range of programs that went beyond traditional academic offerings. Among the highlights were the Indigenous Cohort and an Intro to English program tailored for Level 1 & 2 English Language Learner (ELL) students. These programs supported academic growth and fostered cultural understanding and language development in a supportive environment.
"We are proud of the programs that were implemented this summer,” said Tom van Hunenstijn, Principal of the Secondary Summer School. “They moved beyond the traditional summer school experiences to a multifaceted, hands-on learning opportunity in the classroom and out in the community."
Our Summer Explorers program, designed for students in grades K-8, brought together 800 eager learners across three sites: Clearbrook Elementary, Godson Elementary, and Chief Dan George Middle School. The program focused on inquiry-based learning, emphasizing literacy and numeracy skills. Students engaged in various activities that sparked their curiosity and creativity, from solving problems like making s'mores without electricity to producing reader's theatre, creating art portfolios, baking cupcakes, and honing new sports skills.
The atmosphere throughout the program was consistently positive and energized, thanks to the dedication of our teachers and support staff who came together from across the district. New teams were formed, and students and staff forged meaningful connections that will last well beyond the summer.
Families were invited to witness the culmination of their children's hard work on the final day of Summer Explorers. Students proudly showcased their achievements, sharing their learning journeys with enthusiasm and pride. The program's focus on communication, thinking, and personal and social development was evident in every project and presentation.
"I am proud of our Summer Learning staff,” said Tracy Krys, Principal of Summer Explorers. “They made this a positive and joyful experience for students and their families."
The success of this year's Summer School Programs is a testament to our educators' commitment and our students' enthusiasm. As we look ahead to the new school year, the relationships and skills developed during these summer months will undoubtedly continue to flourish, contributing to a strong start for everyone involved.
